What is Herpes?

Herpes is a common virus that has two forms – HSV I and HSV II. It causes cold sores (in the case of HSV I) and genital herpes (mostly in the case of HSV II). Roughly up to 70% of the global population is infected with HSV I, which is usually picked up during childhood. HSV I is not usually something to worry about. HSV II is also widespread (affecting over 10% of people in the UK) and is almost exclusively transmitted by sexual contact. HSV II causes genital herpes, but this can also be caused by HSV I in certain circumstances. There is no cure for herpes and once infected, the virus will remain with you for life.

Herpes simplex viruses are categorised into two types: herpes type 1 (HSV-1, or oral herpes) and herpes type 2 (HSV-2, or genital herpes).
