What does G6PD do?

G6PD helps the red blood cells to function normally. G6PD also helps protect red blood cells against substances that can build up when you have a fever or take certain medicines. If there is not enough G6PD to protect the red cells, some may be destroyed during fever or while taking these medicines. This is called haemolysis and may be associated with jaundice. If this happens, you may not have enough red blood cells and may become anaemic.

What can I test?

G6PD activity

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an enzyme which helps red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to tissues throughout the body. G6PD also helps to protect red blood cells from damage and premature destruction.
